Photographs of Oakland

As I travel through Oakland on my daily walks, I have taken photographs of many of the neighborhood’s interesting, amusing, and inspiring attractions.

Repurposed Construction in Oakland

The Mad Mex restaurant off of Bates Street has clearly been repurposed at least three times. Based on the single central dormer, it appears as if this building was originally intended as a large, single family dwelling. At some point, this building was clearly subdivided as a two-family and two owner home, as seen by difference in maintenance of the right and left halves of the building and the subdivision of the dormer window into two narrow vertical halves. The first floor of one half of the building was then turned into a commercial space, while the other half remained residential. It appears that some collaboration took place between the owners of the two halves at the time that the one unified roof was installed. This is an example of what has happened to many of the buildings here in Oakland that have been repeatedly repurposed.
